Cleveland landmark was home to baseball until the late 1940's.

(Cleveland) – State Representative Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland) has announced that the Ohio House of Representatives approved a capital budget that includes $150,000 for the restoration of Cleveland’s League Park. The site is the former home of both the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland’s Negro League Baseball teams.

“The rebirth of League Park, coupled with the renaissance of Hough, is an exciting opportunity to blend history and economic revitalization,” said Rep. Williams. “I am proud to have helped secure these vital state dollars to move the project forward.”

Most of the ballpark was demolished in the 1950’s. All that remains today are the ticket booth and part of a wall. The goal of the project is to rebuild League Park as a sports facility and living museum. It would also become a neighborhood center for the Hough community.

“We cannot allow League Park to fade into a distant memory,” said Rep. Williams. “It represents a part of Cleveland history that must be preserved, and saving it will spur significant redevelopment in the community.”

The bricks-and-mortar Capital Appropriations Bill came out of conference committee and passed the Ohio House today. The Ohio Senate must now approve the bill before it heads to Governor Strickland for his consideration and signature.
