Beyonce wins big at Europe Music Awards

The pop singer picked up the awards for Best Female, Best Song for "Halo" and Best Video for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It.)"

BERLIN, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Recording artist Beyonce took home three prizes at Thursday's 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards at the O2 World in Berlin.

The pop singer picked up the awards for Best Female, Best Song for "Halo" and Best Video for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It.)" During her acceptance speech for "Single Ladies," she thanked her husband, hip-hop star Jay-Z, for "putting a ring on it" and marrying her last year.

She also performed "Sweet Dreams" at Thursday night's show.

Eminem won the prize for Best Male artist; Jay-Z earned the award in the Best Urban category; and Irish rock icons U2 were named Best Live Act.

Pop star Lady Gaga was honored in the Best New Act category, while the American band Green Day won an award for being the Best Rock act. German rockers Tokio Hotel were named Best Group.

The British band Placebo was presented with the Best Alternative prize and Turkey's maNga were honored as the Best European Act.

MTV's U.S. channels, mtvU and MTV2, are to air a one-hour version of the awards ceremony Nov. 15, Music World Music/Columbia Records said.
