(Cleveland) – Lawrence Hanson will not be charged for shooting a burglar outside his home early Tuesday morning.
The Cleveland Police Homicide Unit presented the case of the “burglar shot by the homeowner” to the Cleveland City Prosecutor’s Office for review.
After reviewing the facts of the case, the prosecutor’s office declined to issue charges against the 65-year-old Hanson.
The Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office has been identified the burglar as 40-year-old Frederick Lee Hale of MLK Dr. in Cleveland. Hale had an extensive criminal history with multiple arrests for burglary and breaking and entering as well as arrests for drugs, assaults and auto theft.
Lieutenant Thomas Stacho says this all went down at 2:45 am at 13416 St. Clair.
Hanson was awakened by the sound of someone breaking into an attached section of his house. When he went downstairs to investigate, he saw signs that his house was being burglarized.
Hanson returned upstairs, got dressed and grabbed his gun. Upon returning downstairs, Hanson confronted the burglar who fled on foot into the fenced in yard.
Hanson followed and tried to stop the burglar. Once in the yard the burglar turned and began to move toward the home owner. Hanson told detectives that he repeatedly told the burglar to stop and that he was armed.
Hanson stated that he feared for his life as the burglar closed in on him. When the suspect got approximately five feet away he shot him.
It was Hanson who called 911 to report the incident.
