Maple Heights still suffering from housing crisis

(Cleveland) - The effects of the past recession are still lingering in Northeast Ohio.

According to a new survey by ATTOM Data Solutions, the City of Maple Heights is one of the top ten areas, where more than half the homes have underwater mortgages.

The company reports, in almost 67% of the properties in the Cleveland suburb, homeowners owe more on their houses than the structures are worth.

Maple Heights is listed as 10th in the nation for zip codes with the most underwater properties.

Michael Pires of Neighborhood Housing Services of Cleveland blames the Great Recession and predatory lenders. In addition, he explains that home prices have yet to recover from their tremendous decline, employment remains sluggish in Ohio, and median incomes are still flat.

Pires tells Newsradio WTAM 1100, there are a few assistance programs that can help residents, and his organization can assist and counsel homeowners who's houses are no longer affordable.

Maple Heights is not alone in dealing with this crisis with Lorain, Euclid, Akron, and Cleveland making the list of top 150 zip codes in America with underwater homes.
