Law enforcers stress Cuyahoga River safety

Cuyahoga River Safety

(Cleveland) - Local, state, and federal law enforcers gathered at Shooters On The Water, to stress Cuyahoga River safety tips with the boating season ramping up.

Lt. Cmdr. Mickey Dougherty with the U.S. Coast Guard says make sure each passenger is wearing a flotation device when setting sail. On the Cuyahoga, stay away from large ships, and do not moore your boat in a designated safety zone.

Glen Nekvasil, vice president of the Lake Carriers' Association, and Dave Gutheil, chief commercial officer at the Port of Cleveland remind recreational boaters that that the Cuyahoga is primarily used for shipping, and that they need know where the safe passing zones are. The biggest ship always has the right-of-way.

Chuck Stiver of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources urges paddle-boarders, kayakers, and people in small boats to wear thermal protection. He warns that  the water temperature is about 60 degrees, and if you fall in, life threatening hypothermia could quickly develop.
