Mentor Officer Killed In Hit-And-Run; Person In Custody

MENTOR - (UPDATE) Mentor Police now say they have a person in custody in connection to a hit-and-run incident that took the life of one of their officers.

The as yet unidentified officer was struck, and killed, early this morning while assisting with a traffic stop on SR-2 eastbound just east of SR-306 around 1 a.m. . So far, the person in custody has not been charged and it's not clear if he was the driver.

Authorities located the suspect vehicle, a late-model, dark-colored jeep wrangler, at the Mentor Lagoons Marina, where Mentor resident and WKYC videographer Barry Wolfe say's the driver rammed the enterance gate to get in.

This is the Mentor Police Department's first line-of-duty death since 1927.

MENTOR - A Mentor Police officer was killed when he was struck, by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday morning. It happened at approximately 1:00 am, while the officer was assisting in a traffic stop on SR-2 eastbound just east of SR-306. He was transported and later pronounced dead at Tri-point Medical Center.

The suspect vehicle is described as a late-model, dark-colored Jeep Wrangler which will have sustained damage to its right front and possibly right side.

The Mentor Police Department says they are actively pursuing all information leading to the whereabouts of the driver.
