Driverless Truck Tested On Ohio Turnpike

(Berea) - You might not have known it, but last week, a driverless tractor-trailer crossed Northern Ohio on the Ohio Turnpike.

It was actually a tandem of two tractor-trailers, headed from Pittsburgh to Toledo. Each truck had a driver, but along the Turnpike, the second driver turned on what's called "platooning technology," which controlled the tractor trailer as it followed the lead truck.

The truck was developed by Locomation, a trucking company focused on safety, as it develops artificial intelligence that can augment the capabilities of a driver, as the vehicle follows the lead vehicle in a platoon.

Video of portions of the trip across the Turnpike can be seen here.
