Cleveland Fire Is Reminding Us To Help Prevent Kitchen Fires

(Cleveland) -- For Fire Prevention Week, the Cleveland Division of Fire is showing people how to avoid the most common cause of house fires, ones that start in the kitchen. The demonstration was done at the Fire Museum in Downtown Cleveland.

Tips offered by Cleveland Division of Fire spokesman Lieutenant Michael Norman include:
+ If you are sleepy or have drunk alcohol, don't use a stove.
+ Stay in the kitchen while you have food on a stovetop. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the stove.
+ If you are baking or roasting food, check it on a regular basis, stay in the house, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
+ Keep flammable things like oven mitts, food packaging, towels, or curtains away from a stovetop.
+ If you have a small grease cooking fire, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan, and turn off the burner.
+ For an oven fire, turn off the heat, and keep the oven door closed.,
+ Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove, and areas where hot food or drink is prepared.
