4th of July: Water safety urged
Boaters reminded of penalties for boating while intoxicated.

Petty Officer Brandon Blackwell talks with WTAM's Nate Marinchick

(Cleveland)
- On this 4th of July weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard wants to remind people that drinking while boating doesn’t mix.

Petty Officer Brandon Blackwell in Cleveland says that 1/3 of boating accidents are alcohol related and boating while drinking is just as illegal as driving while drinking.

In fact, Blackwell also says boating while intoxicated is even more dangerous that drunk driving. This is because of added elements such as the sun, being on an uneven platform and engine noise drowning out ambient sound.

The penalty for boating while intoxicated is also just as severe as driving while intoxicated.

Blackwell wants to remind boaters to be safe and not boat while intoxicated.
