Back to the drawing board for Eugene Sanders
Most Cleveland teachers want to stick around after 2011.

Scott Stephens of Catalyst Magazine talks to WTAM's Ken Robinson.

(Cleveland)
- It seems veteran Cleveland teachers are not buying into a scheme to reduce their numbers.

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District wants to use federal stimulus money to entice higher paid instructors to become tutors, and then retire in two years. It's an effort to reduce personnel costs.

Administrators had hoped 200 teachers making $60,000 a year or more would take advantage of the separation plan, but only 21 expressed any interest in the proposal as of last Friday's deadline.

Scott Stephens covers the Cleveland Schools for Catalyst Magazine and speculates that teachers don't want to give up stable jobs, to start new careers two years from now in a uncertain economy.

Stephens feels the district will have to come up with better incentives to get teachers to leave their positions. CEO Eugene sanders may announce further efforts to reduce the budget this week.
