If you want to raise a family, you can’t pick a much worse place than Cleveland. That’s if you believe a study by Children’s Health magazine.

In a new survey, Cleveland ranks #95 in a list of the 100 best (and worst) places to raise a family. The survey is for the city proper only, and does not take into account surrounding suburbs.

According to the editors of Children's Health, they wanted to find where in America you can “ build a nest”: a community that's safe, nurturing, stimulating, and economically sound. A neighborhood where parents reflect your values—education, health and fitness, concern for the environment—and raise their children the same way. The kind of place where a child can slip on her rubber boots, grab her colorful umbrella, and play on the quiet, tree-lined street outside her home without worry.

So they embarked on a "comprehensive statistical analysis to rank 100 noteworthy American cities scattered across the country." They considered more than 30 factors that parents deem vitally important, including crime and safety, education, economics, housing, cultural attractions, and health.

When they crunched the numbers, Cleveland didn’t fare well. We were especially hurt by education. Cleveland has a low rate of kids getting high school diplomas, and there are not a lot of people living in the city with higher education degrees. Safety was also a factor weighing against Cleveland.

Number one on the list was Burlington, VT. At the bottom was Detroit, MI.
