Lorain police looking for suspect in murder of 62-year-old Georgino Melendez.
Listen to the neighbor's 911 call
(Lorain) - Neighbors heard a four-year-old Lorain County boy screaming Monday. Turns out the little boy had discovered his grandfather had been gunned down.
Detectives are looking for a suspect in the death of 62-year-old Georgino Melendez. He was shot to death in his home at 2862 Packard Drive.
Neighbors heard Melendez’s grandson screaming and called police. Sgt. Mark Carpentiere says they found the man lying in a pool of blood around 2:00am. He was still alive at the time.
Sgt. Carpentiere says the four-year-old was the only other person home during the murder.
Carpentiere says Melendez was awake during the shooting, but they don’t know how the shooter got in or if Melendez knew the suspect. Melendes died at the hospital.
Neighbors say Melendez lived alone, but would often watch his grandson and granddaughter on weekends, said his friend and neighbor Greg Martin. The 4-year-old boy and toddler-aged girl would spend the afternoon playing in the front yard with their grandfather, Martin said.
The Lorain Police Department is offering a $2,000 reward for anyone with information on the murder. This is Lorain’s fifth murder for 2009.
