Lots of people didn't pay during the Race for the Cure
The event fell about $300,000 short.

Sophie Sureau talks with WTAM's Bill Wills

(Cleveland)- 25,000 people showed up to the recent Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Cleveland, but nearly half of the participants didn't pay.

Regional Director Sophie Sureau told Newsradio WTAM 1100's Bill Wills that the annual event has no fallen $300,000 short of it's goal.

Sureau says this has become a community event that people want to be a part of, but the bottom line is it's still a fundraiser.

The money raised goes for programs to help people in need get a free mammogram, support services for breast cancer survivors, and provide educational outreach programs for people at risk.

The group is encouraging people to continue fundraising because of the shortfall. Sureau says the need is greater this year, and every dollar makes a difference.

The goal this year was $1.7 million, but raised only about $1.4 million.

Sureau says the shortfall is not only a fundraising issue, but it's also a liability issue.
