Dan Murphy was an honor student at St. Ignatius.
(Solon) - A teenager has been killed in a crash involving an all terrain vehicle in Solon.
The Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office identifies the victim as 15-year-old Dan Murphy of University Heights. The crash took place near Hawthorne Parkway on Saturday.
Solon Police report that first responders found Murphy dead at the scene. Another teen was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center with head and leg injuries. Two others were released to their parents at the scene of the accident.
The crash remains under investigation. Dr. Edward Barksdale Jr, head of pediatric surgery at Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital reports ATV's are taking an increasing number of lives, and that he has treated far too many young victims of crashes.
Dr. Barksdale says parents should think twice about letting their children ride an ATV especially if they are between the ages of 6 and 16. He explains that ATV’s are powerful machines that can be difficult for young people to handle.
Murphy was a honor student at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland, and was to attend a fall dance at the high school Saturday evening.
Those at the dance were shocked to learn that Murphy had died that day. The school has placed the following statement on its website.
"Daniel Murphy will be remembered as a great friend, strong student, loving son and faithful brother. The Saint Ignatius High School Community is in shock and grieving tonight.
Known as “Murph” by his friends and teachers, he was a quiet leader who showed his heart through his work ethic. He loved being a student at Ignatius; he was always seen in his Ignatius sportswear. Murph was an honor student.
We struggle to put words to what we are feeling tonight. We stand in solidarity with the Murphy family and all who mourn Daniel. May he rest in the Peace of Christ.
We ask for your prayers for the Murphy family at this time.
We ask the media to please respect the privacy of the families involved. Saint Ignatius will release more information as it becomes appropriate and available for release." (Copyright 2009 Clear Channel, all rights reserved.)
