Lakewood: Historic renovation
Concrete facade being removed from historic building.

See the Bailey Building through the years!

(Lakewood)
- There's a lot of activity at one busy intersection in Lakewood. Mazie Adams with the Lakewood Historical Society says an old building at Detroit and Warren is being brought back to its former glory.

Adams says crews are working to restore the facade of the former Bailey Co. department store on the southeast corner of the intersection. The building, which opened in 1930, once housed a full-service department store, but has been used as office space for the last several years.

Adams says a large crane is being used to remove pre-cast concrete panels that were installed on the building in the 1980's. She says the building's original brick facade is in remarkable shape and is very striking.

Adams says many Lakewood residents have fond memories of the old Bailey's store which became Neville's department story in the mid 1960's.

Adams says the building's first floor originally featured large display windows which are expected to return as well. Adams says the owners plan to convert the lower floor of the building back to retail space with offices upstairs.

She says the owners had been interested in restoring the building because they believe it will draw more tenants.
